All set for a stormy autumn?  GSO’s new season of concerts begins at G Live on November 21 with Debussy’s shimmering depiction of waves and wind, La Mer, before embracing ‘Thunder Breaking over the Fjords’ - the iconic opening of Grieg’s Piano Concerto, and ending with Tchaikovsky’s dramatic interpretation of the High Gothic in the Manfred Symphony. La Mer is the nearest thing to a symphony that Debussy ever composed, a triumph of impressionism with revolutionary orchestration.

Anson Wong is one of Hong Kong’s most exciting young pianists but most importantly, he is a recent addition to the GSO Young Artists hall of fame, having been the stand-out soloist at our competition last year. He will be performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto.

Anson won the Beethoven Prize at the 2025 DublinInternational Piano Competition, the Royal Academy of Music Beethoven Piano and Concerto Prizes and the Delius Prize, as well as top prizes at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Asia and the Ishikawa International Piano Competition.  He has performed in London, Dublin, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Vienna, and Salzburg and his performances have been broadcast on radio and television, so we are looking forward to a fantastic interpretation of Grieg’s romantic blend of 19th century tempestuousness and Norwegian folk tunes.

Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony is unusual in that it tells a story with supernatural themes and Faustian hero. Tchaikovsky considered it amongst his finest work. We hope you will agree!
This is the opening concert of our 2026-7 season.

On February 13 at Charterhouse, our Guildford-based teenage string virtuoso, Mikhail Andreev, will return as soloist to perform Elgar’s Violin Concerto. He is such an exciting young performer, so not to be missed! The programme is a joy – it includes Handel’s Overture in D minor and Brahms’ fabulous Symphony No 2.

In March comes your opportunity to experience another amazing showcase of young musical talent with our Young Artists prize-winners’ concert at Holy Trinity Church on March 6.

Our season ends with a bang at G Live on May 15! The programme opens with Borodin’s Polovtsian Dancesfollowed by Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no 3 featuring one of GSO’s favourite soloists Christos Fountos, rising to a climax of the season with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.
