Orchestra gears up for new season of concerts
GUILDFORD Symphony Orchestra - the town's oldest and original orchestra - has announced its programme of four concerts for the 2004-05 season.
The orchestra, founded in 1919 by Claude Powell, has been conducted by come of English music's most famous names. Elgar directed his Violin Concerto with the orchestra, Vaughan Williams his fifth symphony - written nearby in Dorking - and Roger Quilter his Children's Overture.
With just three conductors since its inception, Darrel Davidson has been the incumbent since 1990. During his directorship, the orchestra has grown hugely in status and numbers.
Although it has professoinal elements, the orchestra remains an amateur group with strong community links - rasing money for local and natoinal charity and supportingyoung artists.
The new season begins on December 4 with the Tidings of Joy concert at Guildford Cathedral. Works will include Thaikovsky's Symphony No4, Liszt's Les Preludes and the Romance for Violin and Orchestra by Dvorak with soloist Lucy Baker.
The concert has also traditionally involved performances of Christmas carols composed by local school children and arranged for orchestra by Mr Davidson.
On February 19, the Una Clark Young Artists Concert will take place at Holy Trinity Church, with a selection of talented young performers invited to play a selection of concerto movements with the orchestra.
The Spring Classics Concert on April 10 will be at Charterhouse Great Hall in Godalming, with Schumann's Manfred Overture, Brahms' Piano Concerto No1, Sibelius' Vasle Triste and his Symphony No5 on the programme.
For the second year in a row - and in the continuing absence of the Civic Hall - the GSO will perform at the Guildford Spectrum. The concert, The Magic of Vienna, will have a traditional light programme from composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and various Strausses.
